- Communicating for a Change by Andy Stanley
My big takeaway from Andy's book was how to design a more effective order of delivery. He taught these simple 5 steps:
- Me - begin by building credibility by talking about yourself. Be open and vulnerable. Share something you are struggling with, questioning, or meditating on.
- We - create the “hook” by asking “am I the only one, or do you share the same questions or frustrations?" Talk about the problem until they are desperate for the answer.
- God - now bring in your scripture. What does God say about this issue? How does the Bible address this problem?
- You - now that we know what the problem is and how God addresses it, what are you going to do about it?
- We - close by casting vision of the preferred future. Begin your vision casting with “Now imagine if we all applied what we just learned. Imagine if..."
This book is a must read for all pastors! It will revolutionize your messages on Sundays. I know it did for me, and our congregation immediately noticed the difference.
- The Big Idea by Dave Ferguson
My big takeaway from Dave's book was to give up on trying to communicate multi-point messages and focus on getting across one point. I learned to take a 3-point message and turn it into a 3-part series. Preaching one point made the messages more memorable and therefore more applicable. Ferguson taught four reasons for narrowing the focus in your communication. He said:
- The more you focus your messages, the greater the relevance.
- The more you focus your messages, the better the connection.
- The more you focus your messages, the higher the quality.
- The more you focus your messages, the stronger the impact.
This book is a definite must read. It will give you better communication skills as well as link you to invaluable materials that you can use to better prepare and better deliver your messages.
